Why is cmyk important
If we mix all the colors together, we end up with black, gradually subtracting lightness as we mix more paint or ink. For pure white, we must leave the paper unprinted, as nothing can be whiter than the paper it is printed upon.
CMYK specifically, and subtractive color in general, has some weaknesses. Black is added to CMY in order to produce rich blacks; without a dedicate black ink, the best we can do is a muddy dark grey. When white light reflects off the colored ink, certain wavelengths are reflected more prominently than others.
This is interpreted by our brains as color. The opposite of subtractive color, additive color, works oppositely from subtractive color. We start with darkness and gradually add luminosity or lightness. Mixing all colors together results in white. Additive color RGB specifically is used for all kinds of display screens which contain red, green and blue pixels that illuminate at various levels to create a full spectrum of visible colors.
RGB is an additive color spectrum, and when all the primary colors are combined, form white. This is analogous to an actual light spectrum, where if you combine all the colors of natural light for instance, all of the colors on a rainbow white light is created. Modern computer monitors use the emittance of light to create colors, and, thus, use the RGB colorspace. This is why most computer programs have RGB colorspace as the default when designing files.
However, with actual printing, ink and toner do not properly represent the emittance of light. Since colors from non-light sources are really observed by the absorption of light, a new colorspace needs to represent that spectrum of color. Thus, the CMYK cyan, magenta, yellow, and black colorspace was created.
This colorspace represents the absorption of light, and when all the primary colors are combined, forms black. The inks subtract the colors red, green, and blue from white light, leaving the cyan, magenta, and yellow. Black is the absence of color. This can be shown in the picture below. Certain colors that can be displayed on a monitor in RGB cannot get printed on a sheet of paper, which is why the colors can change.

However, both models work well enough to trick the human eye into seeing the colors as realistic. As a graphic designer , you do not necessarily need to know the technical side of how either model works to be an effective visual communicator. You do, however, at least need to know which one to use for each type of media. This is basic information that will ensure the quality and accuracy of your visual marketing materials.
If you plan on designing something that will only exist through digital mediums, such as mobile devices, computers, and television, designing in RGB is enough.
